HARRY’S COMMENTS: We are working with a confidential client in their search for a home based Amazon Channel Manager. As I get more of these types of searches, I’m probably going to manage them confidentially because I don’t need my clients being swamped by agency sales reps.

(No offense if you work for an agency.)

Anyway, interesting story: Throughout my recruiting career, I’ve aggressively dodged opportunities to do business with longtime personal friends because executive searches have unpredictable, uncontrollable outcomes. Like college football. And I don’t want my personal friendships getting mixed up in that.

Candidates are people, and people do crazy, unpredictable things.

But I made an exception this time on the grounds that this role’s hiring manager — an old B-school buddy of mine — runs a REALLY cool company with a wonderful consumer product that the world truly needs. (I’m using it right now …)

In short, I’d want one of my own kids to work there.

Which is about as ringing an endorsement as I could give ANY company — friend or foe. And here’s the thing: The client’s flagship product has +11,000 reviews on Amazon (4.1 star avg. / 71% 5-star) with a Fakespot grade of “A”, so I’m not the only person who thinks this company is awesome.

Eleven. Thousand. Reviews.

I’ve always believed that there are no average businesses; only average ways to do business. After I agreed to take this search, my friend FedEx’d me his top three selling products to try out — along with a 12-page workbook designed to help new team members understand the company’s culture.

Kids, this is a $25 million business we’re talking about here.

I’ve done LOADS of searches for companies TEN TIMES that size that didn’t care about their culture that much. And the workbook is actually super thought-provoking! For instance, one of the company’s values is integrity. A Lot of companies say they value integrity — but take a moment and ponder these questions from the client’s workbook …

  • What does integrity mean to you?
  • How does respect for yourself relate to integrity?
  • Now think about your level of respect for [the company]. How does that relate to integrity?
  • What causes you to feel dedicated to something or someone?
  • Now think about dedication related to [the company]. Do you feel dedicated to your work? Why or why not?
  • For what are you most grateful in your daily life?

Oddly enough, as introspective as I am, I can’t say that I’ve ever tried to connect the dots between self-respect, integrity and work — probably because I’ve been self-employed for so many years that the line between those things is very fuzzy.

I am my job. (Put another way: I think, therefore I recruit.)

But if I worked on a close-knit team in a company owned by someone else, it would be ESSENTIAL for me to understand the higher purpose the business serves, the customers whose lives it improves, and how the culture makes the company unique in the marketplace. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts, etc.

I could never work for a company that’s just a wandering generality. Could you?

There’s an adage in the recruiting business that “People get hired for what they’ve done and fired for who they are.” That adage applies to whole companies today: Customers hire a company to do a job and fire the company when promises are broken.

Integrity is the glue that holds it all together.

Which might explain the +11K [mostly] positive reviews on Amazon. JungleScout gives the client’s category an Opportunity Score of EIGHT: “High Demand with relatively low competition.”

These folks have a well run, growing, vertically integrated business that’s killing it on Amazon, with both 1P and 3P relationships. They sell to Amazon, the retailer, and on Amazon the platform. Indeed, “Amazon” is the firm’s most important channel. (And probably will be for a while.)

Question: How would YOU like to manage that relationship?? From HOME? With $100K base salary plus benefits?

Well, here’s your chance.

The company is starting to focus more on digital commerce. That’s not to say they’re not doing digital well today. However, the firm will be “digital-first” in the future, not only with etail and D2C ecommerce domestically – but also with a European push planned for January.

My friend understands that the retail landscape is changing rapidly, and they want to get as much out of Amazon while they can. These are still relatively early days, but there’s no time to waste establishing their D2C model.

That’s where YOU come in.

Currently, the client is using consultants to help them optimize their 1P and 3P Amazon sales. You will be managing those two vendor relationships. There’s an opportunity for your activities to overlap with D2C ecommerce, but this is by no means decided.

But make no mistake: This job will be a BIG responsibility. Amazon is a BIG part of the client’s business. Win or lose, you’ll be the hero or the goat (and not the good kind of GOAT.)

How well do you know Amazon?

We are looking for someone who is a digital native and understands Amazon intimately. You’ll need to understand ecommerce inside and out, and you’ll need to rise to the Bezos standard.

You won’t believe how much we know about this search …
