One of the coolest ecommerce jobs around!
ALLAN’S COMMENTS: We are working with a maker of science-based educational products in their search for a world-class Ecommerce Front End Designer based in North Carolina.
NOTE: This is a REMOTE position, but this new hire will be expected to be onsite one week each-and-every quarter. Travel costs will be covered by the company.
Were a candidate to reside within driving distance and be willing to work onsite two days a week, then the hiring team would be very interested in that arrangement. This is not a hard-fast “MUST” — but this ability would a major differentiator in one’s candidacy.
About the Role
We are looking for an ecommerce front end designer who has hands-on UX best practices experience. That’s the Cliff’s Notes version of this post. But let’s dive deeper …
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining creative visual assets that live on the company’s websites. This includes graphics, HTML-based pages, page templates/designs, dynamic merchandising/marketing elements, and site advertisements.
You’ll also be able to design, build, and maintain “microsites” as the firm expands into different markets and launches key corporate initiatives.
You will work closely with the firm’s Ecommerce and Customer Teams (among others) to support the firm’s key business initiatives on the web. Naturally, you’ll see regular action within the company’s CMS as you create, organize, and deploy visual assets to the company’s websites.
We’re looking for an experienced Ecom Front End Designer with serious chops in HTML and CMS platforms, particularly WordPress and Oracle. Any enterprise-level CMS platform experience is preferred. In particular, we’re looking for someone who understands how to get things done in a transactional, e-commerce environment, creating landing pages, banners, templates, and merchandising websites.
While design experience with tools like Adobe Creative Suite is appreciated, we’ll be placing a higher priority on front-end design and usability chops, looking for candidates who can contribute to improving conversion rates and enhancing user experiences.
In this role, our ideal candidate will possess a unique combination of technical and project management skills. You’ll need to be GREAT at multitasking and managing multiple projects across different timelines, mirroring an agency-style workflow. Proficiency in UX wireframing tools like Figma and familiarity with data-driven A/B testing methodologies will be essential for contributing to the team’s ongoing projects.
For example, you’ll be assisting with the brand guideline rollout, ensuring ADA compliance without relying heavily on third-party tools, while developing strategies to address website usability challenges. Meaning, you’ll need to demonstrate initiative and a collaborative mindset and be capable of identifying areas for improvement by analyzing customer feedback, market trends, and competitor benchmarks.
Naturally, strong communication skills are vital, as the role involves engaging with stakeholders and presenting thoughtful, data-supported design recommendations. Other relevant soft skills include time management, adaptability, and a proactive attitude.
To be clear, we’re looking for a proven team-oriented self-starter who can balance competing priorities without requiring extensive oversight. You must be comfortable in a dynamic environment where progress often precedes perfection.
NOTE: While local candidates who can work on a hybrid schedule are preferred, we are open to remote candidates for the right fit, provided they can travel to the office a few times a year. The comp package includes a highly competitive base plus benefits including profit sharing and bonuses. The firm’s stability is noteworthy: These folks have consistently provided profit sharing for over a decade, even through economic downturns.
How many ecom firms can say that?
Still, this gig isn’t for everyone. Beyond the technical business requirements, candidates need to be comfortable working with an organization that deals in scientific educational materials, including preserved specimens. The company ethically sources specimens while ensuring the collection of specimens does not negatively impact the ecosystem balance.
Most importantly, they need to be aligned with the company’s mission of supporting science education for future generations.
This role offers a unique opportunity to apply ecommerce expertise in support of science education while working with a stable, mission-driven organization that has been a leader in their field for generations.
