ALLAN’S COMMENTS: In their search for a world-class Sr. Director of Digital & Ecommerce, we are working with a major footwear retailer based in the southeast USA. We’ve worked with these folks many times before, and they’re amazing.

NOTE: This is an onsite role and the location can be shared with qualified and interested candidates. Relocation is expected with assistance.

About the Role

In this role, you’ll drive digital strategy, sales, customer experience and operational efficiencies for a major footwear retailer’s digital channels. You’ll be responsible for managing best-in-class analytics, personalization and optimization, product discovery and customer experiences.

Moreover, you’ll work very closely with the Chief Digital Officer (who’s a friend) to shape the firm’s digital commerce strategy and manage ecom operations to deliver profitable growth.

It’s a big job!

The role carries full P&L ownership, which is why the perfect candidate will blend analytics, creative vision, and operational rigor while leading a high-performing team across marketing, merchandising, and technology to accelerate growth and ensure alignment with broader corporate priorities.

Omnichannel ecom is a dynamic dog-eat-dog business, and it’s time for the client to update its digital playbook. Currently, the company’s ecom business underperforms, and it’s looking to scale to 15% of total revenue. To do that, you’ll need to tackle a few heady legacy issues, some operational complexity, and platform technical debt — all while serving as the central orchestrator for digital transformation in an organization with deep retail roots.

Additionally, the client operates a separate children’s brand built on Shopify, which is generating solid margins with minimal oversight. And the digital marketing team, newly brought in by current leadership, is showing tons of promise.

Plus, there’s openness to revamping the martech stack and a shared acknowledgment at the C-level that digital can be a core engine of growth. You’ll help determine if the client should remain on its current platform or migrate to a more scalable and agile alternative like Shopify.

Leadership isn’t shying away from the challenges.

You’ll have very clear P&L ownership, visibility to the CEO, and the authority to co-design and build the future state digital org from scratch. You’ll play a pivotal role in evaluating and potentially replacing underperforming team members, reshaping agency and platform partnerships, and leading a company-wide shift in digital competence and accountability.

To win in this role, you’ll need a deep understanding of ecommerce architecture, customer experience optimization, and bottom-funnel media. This is a role for a tech-savvy strategist who understands that “full-funnel” starts with product discovery, ends with conversion, and lives or dies by clean data flows, disciplined testing, and cross-functional alignment.

Candidates who began their careers in product management, digital operations, or ecommerce analytics and later stepped into broader commercial ownership are ideal.

Equally important are deep chops in executive communication and change management.

Again, this is a cross-functional environment with legacy processes, under-documented systems, and a history of vendor overreach. You must be able to influence up, down, and laterally — earning trust, building bridges, and pushing forward even when full clarity doesn’t exist.

You’ll be tasked with managing ambiguity, creating focus, and making decisions based on imperfect information. Think of this as a post-replatform triage and reinvention role: It’s less about sexy branding, and more about surgical fixes and re-architecting operational truth.

Base compensation is VERY competitive for the right candidate, and the bonus will be awarded annually based on performance and contribution (not just top-line results). The company is privately held, debt-free, and known for strong benefits, including reliable merit increases and discretionary bonuses.

While the team is still ironing out return-to-office and relocation expectations, this is ultimately an onsite role, with potential relocation support negotiable based on seniority and fit.

BOTTOM LINE: If you’re a proven digital operator who thrives in ambiguity, relishes the challenge of untangling complex environments, and wants to work directly with a high-trust leadership team ready to back bold ideas, this is your moment. You’ll inherit the keys to a complex but fixable business—and be measured not by how well you maintain it, but by how far you can scale it.
